Shiprock, or Tsé Bitʼaʼí, “rock with wings” in Navajo, stands alone in the northwestern New Mexico desert. It is within the Navajo Nation, and is sacred to their people, playing a part in many Navajo legends.

Shiprock is a volcanic formation, made of rocks that solidified underground in the throat of a volcano about 27 million years ago and were then slowly exposed after millions of years of erosion.

The majestic views from the highway overlooks, or even from an airplane, and the long, long history of Shiprock, leave me in silent awe.
